About

alec-westlaI’d like to just say “I’m creative” but that just doesn’t quite cut it, does it?

So here goes.  I’m a comedy writer.  A web site designer.  A marketing strategist.  An online video producer.

I’m part of a new breed of TV writers, someone who can both write and bring digital media & marketing to the conversation.

I create stories, media, viral videos, TV scripts, blogs, strategy docs, and… soon, books.

I also like to help clients make things.  Hopefully, that can be you.

Related Work

I work with a couple of partners and therefore have a couple of business cards:

I co-founded Space Shank Media in 2006, a production company that creates online and television entertainment, including the award-winning Flipper Nation, a pilot concept for ABC, and the Battlestar Galactica parody web series My Roommate the Cylon.  We’re actively pitching new projects to broadcast TV and digital networks.

I’m a partner in McBeard Media, a social media agency that created the humor blog Historical Tweets, as well as the forthcoming book, published by Villard/Random House.  We have a few spin-offs in the works, including Biblical Tweets and Twitegy.

All that, and as a consultant, I help organizations improve their online marketing strategies, working with clients like UCLA, Pepperdine University, Mann Theatres, and Generosity Water.

I’m also a regular columnist covering online entertainment for Script Magazine, the monthly, nationally distributed trade and craft magazine for screenwriters (owned by Final Draft).

Background

I spent seven years at Pepperdine University, where I started as a web designer and ended up creating online marketing strategy, producing videos, copy writing, and emceeing a lot of live events.

During that time, I also worked as a freelance web designer; my most notable client was Mann Theatres, owner of the world-famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
